Foods to avoid feeding your rabbit

To help keep your bunny happy and healthy avoid feeding them these foods:

  1. Chocolate: Chocolate is toxic to rabbits and can cause severe digestive problems, seizures, and even death.

  2. Avocado: Avocado contains persin, a substance that can be toxic to rabbits and cause respiratory distress, heart failure and death.

  3. Iceberg lettuce: While other types of lettuce are okay for rabbits, iceberg lettuce has little nutritional value and can cause diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration.

  4. Potatoes: Potatoes are high in starch and can cause digestive problems in rabbits. They can also be toxic if they have started to sprout or turn green.

  5. Rhubarb: Rhubarb contains oxalic acid which can be toxic to rabbits and cause digestive problems. 

  6. Tomato leaves and stems: While tomatoes themselves are not harmful to rabbits, the leaves and stems contain a toxin called solanine that can cause digestive upset and even paralysis.

  7. Seeds and pits: Seeds and pits from fruits like apples, cherries, and peaches can be a choking hazard and can also contain cyanide.

  8. Cabbage: Cabbage can cause gas and bloating in rabbits, which can be very painful and even lead to life-threatening complications.

  9. Bread and other carbohydrates: Bread and other carbohydrates are not a natural part of a rabbit's diet and can lead to obesity and digestive problems.

  10. Dairy products: Rabbits are lactose intolerant, and dairy products can cause digestive upset and diarrhea.
